Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Paradiso
The Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Paradiso, or Church of Paradise, is a building constructed in 1495 that has undergone several renovations, the first in 1565 followed by others in the 18ᵗʰ and 19ᵗʰ centuries.
The bare and austere façade conceals an interior rich in paintings, chapels and evocative works, amongst which the miraculous 15ᵗʰ-century fresco of Our Lady of Sorrows stands out.
This fresco has a great and enduring emotional value for the whole community. At every event in Clusone, be it happy or sad, individual or collective, an encounter with the Madonna has always taken place at the foot of this inspired fresco and continues to occur to this day.
The rich interior decoration and furnishings safeguards numerous works by local painters, sculptors, chisellers and carvers. Amongst others, the altarpieces by local artists Carpinoni, Cifrondi, Galizzi and Brighenti and the allegories of Faith, Hope and Charity by Andrea Fantoni are worth mentioning.
Interestingly, the façade is made of local stone. Tradition tells that these stones came from a number of forts, the refuge of the Guelphs and Ghibellines. The fresco depicting Our Lady of Sorrows is described as miraculous because the Madonna, after being slashed with a sword, is said to have wept three drops of blood.
