In 2025, as part of the fourth edition of the Festival Musica Mirabilis, Clusone will become the venue for the first ‘Giovanni Legrenzi’ International Competition, reserved for singers and instrumental ensembles composed of musicians under 35 (born no earlier than 1990) from all over Europe.

There will be two categories of the competition: for Instrumental Ensembles and Baroque Singing.
In the week before the final round, the semi-finals will be held in Clusone and then on Saturday the finalists will perform in concert before the winners are announced.

 

BAROQUE SINGING COMPETITION

The competition aims to identify emerging vocal talents to be involved in a concert career and in the artistic programming of «Musica Mirabilis», the international festival «Giovanni Legrenzi» and other related initiatives.

Dates: 23 to 27 September 2025
Venue: Church of San Defendente

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
To be admitted to the competition, it will be necessary to pass a selective test consisting of a live video recording (no cuts), containing the full performance of a sacred or secular vocal piece, in Italian or Latin language, by a seventeenth-century Italian author, at the candidate’s choice, lasting no more than ten minutes.

The accompaniment must be set to harpsichord, organ or other polyphonic instrument (theorbo, archlute or baroque harp).
Candidates admitted to the second round, (in the presence of the jury), will be notified no later than August 15, 2025.

The candidates admitted to the second round of the competition to be held starting on Wednesday, September 24, at 3:00 p.m., at the Church of San Defendente, must perform two solo pieces, one by seventeen-century by Italian composer of the candidate’s own choice and another piece, a Canzonetta by Giovanni Legrenzi, from opera XII. The performance shall not exceed twenty minutes.

Candidates will be given one hour of time to rehearse these pieces.

FINAL TEST
The candidates will perform a solo recital, consisting at least two Cantatas from Legrenzi’s 12th opera: «Cantate e canzonette a voce sola», lasting a maximum of 20 minutes, chosen from the following list.

  1. Cantatas for Soprano or Tenor
  2. Cantatas for Alto
  3. Cantatas for Bass

The final test will take place on Saturday 27 September at 3:00 pm, at the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Paradise in Clusone.
The organization will make an harpsichord and organ players available for the final test. Nothing prevents the candidate from making use of his own accompanying master.

COMPETITION FOR INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES

To be admitted to the competition, it will be necessary to pass a selective test consisting of a live video recording (no cuts), containing the full performance of an Instrumental piece, by an Italian author of the seventeenth-century, the choice of the ensemble itself, lasting no more than ten minutes.

Ensembles admitted to the second round, (in the presence of the jury), will be notified no later than September 15, 2025.

The ensembles admitted to the second round of the competition to be held starting on Wednesday, October 22, at 3:00 p.m., at the Church of San Defendente, will have to perform two compositions, one by seventeen-century Italian composers of the ensemble’s own choice and one Sonata by Giovanni Legrenzi, from opera II (Sonate a due e tre, Venezia, 1655). The performance shall not exceed twenty minutes.
Ensembles will be given one hour of time to rehearse these pieces.

FINAL TEST
The ensembles will perform a recital, with a program of at least two Sonatas by Giovanni Legrenzi, lasting a maximum of 20 minutes. The first sonata must belong to one of the following two collections: Sonate da chiesa, da camera, op. IV (Venezia, 1656); Sonate a due, tre, cinque e sei istromenti, op. VIII (Venezia, 1663). The second sonata must belong to the collection La Cetra. Sonate a due, tre e quattro stromenti, op. X ( Venezia, 1673).

The final test will take place on Saturday 25 October, at 3:00 pm, at the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Paradise in Clusone.
